Ontario Nursing Informatics Group

About Us

The Ontario Nursing Informatics Group (ONIG) was formed in 1980 and achieved RNAO status as an affiliate group in 1991. ONIG's purpose is to provide a forum for nursing and other professionals to communicate and disseminate current developments in health informatics and eHealth.

ONIG’s mission is to build a supportive community of informaticians within Ontario through initiatives that promote education, research and practice.

Nursing and health informatics are recognized specialties within the profession of nursing. ONIG promotes the awareness and value of Nursing's contribution to quality health care through health data, information and knowledge management enabled by the use of technology.

New ONIG Executive Members

President Elect- Monica Purdy (Toronto)

Hi my name is Monica Purdy and I accept the honour of serving you as the new President Elect of ONIG. I have a deep sense of obligation to public service, specifically in healthcare and nursing. My interest and past work experience as an advance practice nurse is in informatics. More recently I have worked as an adjudicator and mediator for two Ontario Tribunals. In those roles, I assisted parties through the dispute resolution process to find interest based solutions to complex issues. With my experience as an adjudicator and nurse, I welcome the opportunity to continue the tradition of innovation and leadership that is necessary to grow ONIG. I look forward to meeting you all and promise to listen and learn as we embark on this new journey together.

Treasurer/Finance- Judita Szilagyi (Peterborough)

I feel privileged to serve as Treasurer/Finance Director for the Ontario Nursing Informatics Group. I have been a Registered Nurse for over 4 decades and I have worked as a Nurse in acute care and long term care settings; I also had the opportunity to work as a Clinical Informatics Consultant, Program Support Partner in Information Systems, and being an eHealth Champion for RNAO. Currently I am employed as Care Coordinator at Central East LHIN, Home and Community Care Division- Point of Access Hospital at Peterborough Regional Health Centre. I hold a BScN from Ryerson University. I look forward meeting and working with you.

Membership- Ryan Chan (London)

Hello everyone, my name is Ryan Chan and I am currently a PhD student working under the supervision of Dr. Richard Booth, at the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing, Western University. My area of research interests includes nursing informatics, digital health, and the integration of technology in both academic and clinical practice environments. I am also currently engaged in clinical practice in my role as a staff nurse in the Emergency Department at London Health Sciences Centre. I am looking forward to being part of ONIG and to serve as your Membership executive, and I am very hopeful that we can build a strong community of nursing informaticians in Ontario.

Student- Adriana Congi (Amherstberg)

I will be entering my fourth year of the BScN program at the University of Windsor this fall. I have a previous degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ottawa. I have served two years as the Student Ambassador on the Canadian Vascular Access Association executive where I gained a considerable amount of knowledge in infusion therapy and vascular access and I have relayed that information to my peers and educators. I had the amazing opportunity to be involved in the creation of the first vascular access guidelines in Canada. I am also a nursing Peer Tutor assisting students with all nursing theory courses and teaching the key health assessment nursing skills. I am currently working in a student position for the Government of Canada and I also teach CPR and First Aid courses in my community. I hope to bring a new student perspective, especially from South Western Ontario, to the executive and I will outreach and encourage other students and nurses to join and get involved in the group activities and promote important discussions between the two groups.
