Education Day Reflection – November 4th – Brampton Civic Hospital, William Osler Health System (WOHS)
What a successful event! As the organizer for the host site, it was very exciting to see so many faces (some familiar and some new to me) at the Brampton Civic Hospital today. The room was packed and filled with energy.
The presenters were excellent and their presentations, equally top notch. There were over 50 on-site participants who represented about 27 different sites/organizations, five OTN sites (Grand River Hospital, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, St. Joseph’s Health Care London, Georgian Bay and Headwaters Health Care Centre) and approximately18 people connected via web casting.
The first presenter was James Moolecherry – Chief Technology Officer at Osler. His presentation examined the importance of technology during Process Change. Similarly, he reiterated the support required by Osler’s leaders and stakeholders – embracing technology and change, delivering the right information when and where it is needed, and adopting leading practices and evidenced-based frameworks. He also reviewed Osler’s strategic IM/IT Projects including the current status of eHealth initiatives, results distribution, Positive Patient ID, Video conferencing, and the Evergreen program. It was exciting to hear about the concepts of Telehomecare, mobile care and keeping patients in their homes. Thank you James.
The next group of presenters again were from Osler. The PIP team gave a thorough presentation utilizing technology to support some projects that the team have been working on such as improving patient flow, and patient and staff satisfaction. They demonstrated the use of the DART (Daily Access Reporting Tool), automated Housekeeping System, and the ED Admit Status Board. Finally, the PIP team presented ‘what is next’, including ‘Unit Performance Huddles’ where Unit Managers and the team gather to quickly review the data from the day before and discuss how to make improvements. Metrics around Service Excellence, Access, Effectiveness and Safety will be reviewed daily. Great job ladies.
ONIG bylaw changes were presented next. ONIG has grown significantly over the last few years, and subsequently, the organization’s bylaws need to be continually addressed in order to reflect the unique group of individuals who embrace informatics within the province of Ontario. Voting ballots were sent via Survey Monkey to the registered members and on site participants had access to computers to complete voting. Voting was also accomplished on personal Smartphones. Results will be posted soon.
Our last speaker – Dr. Deb Hutchinson. Wow! Her demo of ClinicalConnect certainly led to many questions regarding the eHealth vision of an integrated record in this province. I loved the analogy she described of how ClinicalConnect was like ‘looking through a window and that anyone viewing could have a different view’. Using this system, Dr. Hutchinson has connected 28 remote sites including the CCAC. At Osler we use REACH which is from the same company. The availablility of patient data, any where and any time is where we need to be.
The ONIG education day on November 4th was awesome experience. Thank you ONIG for providing these great opportunities. I look forward to being part of the next Education Day…
